Cuando empieza la novela, se sabe que los hermanos Vicario van a matar a Santiago Nasar para vengar el honor ultrajado de su hermana Ángela, pero nadie parecer hacer nada por impedirlo, y el relato termina precisamente en el momento en que Santiago Nasar muere. La presente edición escolar incluye material didáctico a cargo de Yannelys Aparicio y Ángel Esteban, quienes además ofrecen a los lectores un acercamiento a la vida y la obra del autor a fin de señalar las circunstancias y los sucesos familiares que contribuyeron a la gestación de la trama.
